Cuckoo - "Johnny" Hope - or more popularly known as "Hopo" - had spent many years in BEA, being an official who won great popularity among all classes of the community. He was liked and trusted by all, and the ideal man to administer a European settler region. He did not suffer from a superiority complex.  
Permanent Way - was instructed to demarcate a line through southern Kikuyu which would divide the land believed to be occupied by the Wakikuyu from that which appeared to be unoccupied. ........ Mr Hope had to tackle his task in a hurry, and it was no easy task.

Gazette - 27/9/1927 - Obituary - His Excellency the Governor desires on behalf of Government to express the deep regret felt by all branches of the Service at the death of John Owen Webley Hope, Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George, on September 15th 1927.
Mr Hope retired on pension on August 2nd 1927 after 28 years service in the Kenya Administration during which he filled with distinction the posts of District and Provincial Commissioners. For 2 years during the East African Campaign he was Chief Political Officer and was made a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1918 in recognition of that service. In 1925 he was appointed as a British Commissioner on the Anglo-Italian Boundary Commission. He was a member of the Legislative Council from April 1924 to December 1926.
Mr Hope earned the affectionate regard of all races by his admirable qualities, and his sound judgment and knowledge of the country. His loss will be greatly felt by his many friends throughout Kenya.
