Tenniel Evans, Don't Walk in the Long Grass: Joe and Kath Babington lived in a pleasant homestead in a wooded ridge some way up the slopes of Mount Elgon. Joe Babington was a tall, elderly New Zealander; we knew this because he always wore a smart Kiwi hat like the stiff tall hat worn by Baden Powell in all those pictures of him which used to hang in Scout halls, only darker. Joe was slim and upright and he had a pink flannelette face with a long nose that — I swear — twitched. He also had pale blue, hot little eyes that followed the girls about, a fact which even I noticed, though I could not imagine why; they were just my sisters and not worth watching. I liked him though. He was interested in things like stamps and animals and was a keen butterfly collector. Below the house ran a stream, bounding down the mountainside in falls and pools, with thick, lush forest almost hiding it.
