Mr Engelbrecht was the contractor who built the first African housing scheme. He made concrete blocks and did all the construction. Prior to that he was famed for driving an Oldsmobile carriage service from Nyeri to Nairobi three times a week with the mail, a feat in those days. The Duchess of York (now the Queen Mother) presented him with a signed photograph of herself.
