East Africa & Rhodesia - 1/9/55 - Canon Alfred Rowland Pittway, of the Church Missionary Society, who recently collapsed and died on Chelmsford railway station, went to Kenya a few years after serving in the 1914-18 war, and was ordained by the Bishop of Mombasa in 1929. Trained at St. John's College, Durham, and St. Andrew's Hostel, he was appointed a Canon of the diocese of Mombasa in 1943 and principal of the Bible school in Maseno last year. He had arrived back in England on leave earlier in the summer. Canon Pittway, who was the author of several tracts on devotional and doctrinal subjects, was 58.
Foster - In 1948 he was the Rural Dean of the Southern Highlands, his final post was as Principal of the Bible School at Maseno. His wife combined her missionary work amongst women and girls and the wider task of caring for women of the Church at large. He died on 19 August 1955. She returned to Kenya and worked with the wives of the ordinands at St Paul's United Theological College until her final retirement to England on 18 March 1960
