East Africa & Rhodesia - 7/1/54 - Mr Monthermer Stanley Hume Montagu, MC, who has died in Nairobi aged 85, had lived in Kenya, since 1910, taking up farming after a distinguished military career. Even in 1943, at the age of 75, he served as a private in the Kenya Defence Force. The son of Lord Robert Montagu, and grandson of the 7th Duke of Manchester, he was born in London, educated at Wellington College, and after serving an engineering apprenticeship, went to Assam. At 31 he sailed for South Africa, enlisting under Plumer in the Rhodesia Regt. After the SA War, Mr Montagu transferred to the Namaqualand Border Scouts, commanding them for a year. Later he joined the Legion of Frontiersmen.
He was commissioned in the EAMR on their formation in 1914. After demobilization he farmed near Thomson's Falls, and later near Kiambu. His military decorations included the MC, awarded in 1918, the Queen's medal with 4 clasps (S. Africa) and the King's medal with 2 clasps. During the East African campaign he was mentioned in dispatches.
One of his 2 sons was killed in action with the RAF in 1942.
