Ancestry family tree says he went to Kenya in 1927 to join his father Richard in his farming endeavours. In 1925 he was a sawmiller working for his father in Leith.
The father (1976 Leith-1953 Edinburgh) went to Kenya, Makuyu, to engage in wheat farming in 1927. In 1939 he returned to England to expedite a court case for alleged land misrepresentation in Kenya - a retrial was granted by the House of Lords. In 1902 he married  in Leith Grace Henderson (1881 Leith-1922 Duns) and had 2 sons - Richard and Thomas (1904 Leith-1979 Edinburgh).
