Web Colonel J. H. V. (Jack) Higgon, of Scolton, was a Captain in the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards stationed in Knightsbridge when he was chosen to guard the Kings coffin in Westminster Hall from January 23rd to 28th, 1936. His widow, Mrs Joan Higgon, treasures a letter from King Edward VIII, thanking him for his part in the ceremonial. As Prince of Wales, the new King was also based at Knightsbridge. Colonel Higgon, who revived Haverfordwest Gild of Freeman in the 1970s and had a long association with the Pembrokeshire Agricultural Society, of which he was president in 1949, a trustee and senior show director, served in France during the last war and was taken prisoner by the Germans at Bologne early in the war. He spent several years in a POW camp, where he was senior officer. He died in 1983.
