General Information:

Eldoret - Partner with L.A. Johnson in first successful gold mining venture in Kakamega. Farmer ...... a well-known personality whose death has TWICE been announced over the radio and in the paper. He is still very much alive [1967]. He came to Kenya in 1912 and was first a forest officer. He claims to be the first man to have a motorbike in Kenya, but a runner had to go before him with a supply of petrol. At first there were no working oxen and they had to be trained; eventually there were 100 teams between Eldoret and Londiani and the wagons carried three tons. He bought a car from S.Africa which had been brought to Kenya full of sovereigns (they were worth 50/- here). Mr and Mrs Newton's work for the RASK should not be forgotten.
