Gazette - 1-5-1905 - Probate and Administration - late surveyor R.B. Newton of Naivasha deceased who was drowned at Naivasha (Morendat river) on the 10th day of April 1905
Gazette - 1/5/1905 - Obituary - It is with deep regret that the death is recorded of Mr R.B. Newton, Assistant in the Survey Department on the 10th instant.
The deceased was traversing the Morendat river and to reach a station point on the other side of the stream attempted to ford the river. It appears that after wading a few yards he suddenly disappeared below the surface and was never seen again. Investigation has shown that at this point a deep hole exists the bottom of which is covered with sticky mud and weeds. It is surmised that the deceased slipped into the hole and became entangled in the long grass. Diligent search only resulted in the recovery of the body by Police Inspector Rayne on the morning of the 14th instant. The remains were buried at Naivasha the same afternoon.
The deceased who was only 24 years of age was a most conscientious and efficient worker popular with all with whom he came in contact and the Government in his death sustains a most regrettable loss.
