General Information:

In WW1, before joining the KAR he was invalided out of the army and returned to his official duties. He was a keen Freemason, and there was a general gratification in the Craft when the honour of PGD of the United Grand Lodge of England was conferred on him in 1933. His death was mourned throughout EA.

East Africa & Rhodesia - 11/8/55 - Mr Edward ("Eddy") Barret, who has died in Kenya, first went to East Africa in 1913 as solicitor to the Land Office in Nairobi. As soon as war broke out in the following year he joined the East African Mounted Rifles, and was later commissioned in the KAR. Soon after being demobilized he joined the legal firm of Shapley & Schwartze, in which he later became a partner. Deeply interested in Freemasonry, he was for a number of years the District Grand Secretary in East Africa, and he held the rank of P.G.D. in the United Grand Lodge of England. He rendered devoted service to the Craft. He was a past president of the Law Society of Kenya, and a vice-president of Muthaiga Rugby Football Club. His hobbies were carpentry and amateur theatricals, in which Mrs Barret (Gwen Alban) has been prominent in Nairobi.
