Trans Nzoia Scrap Book - 'Flower-Collecting in the Trans Nzoia' - ….. Major E.J. Lugard, who was a brother of the famous Lord Lugard, came out on a visit to his son Cyril, who had a farm on Elgon. Major Lugard in his young days had done a lot of collecting for Kew, and he proceeded to make the first extensive collection of Trans Nzoia plants, ascending Elgon for this purpose. He was helped by Cyril and Kitty Lugard, and between them they made three ascents of Elgon, and collected 649 species, of which 36 were found to be new to science. Mrs E.J. Lugard also made drawings of some of these flowers, which were subsequently exhibited at a winter show of the Royal Horticultural Society and awarded a silver Grenfell medal.
