Dict of Scottish Architects: Arthur George Wright Ogilvie was born on 1 July 1893 and was articled to Leslie Ower & Allan of Dundee in July 1912, remaining with Thoms & Wilkie after the latter firm took over the Ower & Allan business following Ower's retirement in 1916. During this period he attended classes at the Dundee School of Art. Ogilvie left to join the army in 1917, but returned to Dundee in January 1919 to join Frank Drummond Thomson as senior assistant. Only a few months later, in July that year, he emigrated to Hong Kong to work for Palmer & Turner, leaving them in August 1925 to commence practice on his own account. In 1928 or 1929 he moved to Kenya and he was still practising there, in Mombasa, when he was elected FRIBA in late 1932 or early 1933, his proposers being W J Price of Jerusalem, and Patrick Hill Thoms and William Salmond of Dundee. His nomination papers state that he had travelled extensively in China, Japan and French Indo-China, particularly the ruins at Angkor in Cambodia. His work involved commercial as well as domestic buildings. Ogilvie remained working in Kenya for the rest of his career.
