General Information:

The Globe Trotter - 6th March 1907 - An Engine Driver's story - " …. The head driver was Angus Mackay an Aberdeen man. He had forgotten more about traction engines than most people know. It was hard work to keep pace with him. On his engine at day-light, he would come for breakfast, if not ready (generally the case) he would start off and perhaps have it at 5 p.m. He had a very funny tale about a pet monkey, though unfortunately, I cannot now reproduce his words. It must have been one Sunday he was cooking his "parritel" when he noticed that the lid of the kettle was vibrating although the water was cold. He thought it curious, but continued his meditations. It turned out to be the monkey which had found its last experiences thus spying into pots. He had cooked his monkey. When Sultan Hamud station had another name, Angus died and is buried some half mile from the station in the bush. The Chief Engineer is reported to have said that he was the hardest working man under him. Those who were here in the last century will be glad to recall his memory.
