Curtis - p. 37 - Life at Fort Smith - '....... [1894 letter from Francis Hall to his father]] .. Martin and his wife came up and stayed here about 12 days. I gave them my quarters and we had a very jolly time. She is Portuguese but very nice; and plays, and sings in several languages, and as old Dugmore (in charge of the troops) has the American organ (that I brought out for him) up here, we had some musical evenings, Russell on the 1st whistle, Lane banjo and Mrs M. on the organ, while I occasionally had to warble as my share, and another fellow here, Trefusis, plays the autoharp very well. By-the-bye I shall be mentioning names you don't know, so I must tell you that two Mombasa firms have agents up here, living about 1000 yards from the Fort. Trefusis, a very good sort who has travelled the world, is one, and a man named Walsh with his wife for the other. Then we have one coffee planter, Kitchen, and Dr. Wallace's party just coming. Mr Wallace (brother) and his wife arrived about 10 days ago and Dr Boedecker and wife, and a Mr McQueen and wife are to arrive tomorrow. We shall then have 10 Europeans resident in Kikuyu.

Nicholls - On 11 March 1896 Walter Trefusis, Smith Mackenzie's agent, arrived at Fort Smith and fixed on a piece of land off the road below Kinanjui's village, as a place to erect a store. It was to be run by Mr & Mrs John Walshe [sic] who were building it in July. They invested in some goats - Mary Walshe was seen on the road from Machakos, unconcernedly driving a herd of goats alone to Fort Smith. Her husband was far behind, struggling with his donkey cart's detached wheel. As a teenager Mary Walshe had left Ireland for Australia with her first husband. Within 12 years he and their 2 small children were dead. Mary then went to Rhodesia where she met and married John Walshe with whom she trekked up to East Africa. Small, fierce and red-headed, with a weather-beaten face, Mary Walshe was as tough as they come and not of the same social class as Frank Hall, to whom such things mattered ……… Mary was called 'Bibi Kiboko' (whip woman) by the Africans because she was unsparing with her kiboko, or rhino-hide whip.

Johnson - I Married Adventure - 1921 - We met John Walsh in Nairobi at one of the native markets. His occupation was "killin' meat," and he was completely matter-of-fact about it. Weathered and hard as a knot of hickory, nevertheless his sandy hair was sprinkled with gray, and his back was quite bent. He was very sensitive about his age and tried to straighten his round shoulders whenever he caught us looking at him.
When he got to know us a little better, he confessed to sixty years, but he was probably well over seventy.
Martin eyed him with proper respect. A man of his age who could make a living that way must know his business.
Mr. Walsh concluded his dickering with the native market owner - grumbling out of habit, I'm sure - and, pushing whatever money he had collected into a greasy snap purse, was about to climb into his old Ford when Martin stopped him.
"I'd like to talk to you, Mr. Walsh." he said.
"Shoot," replied Mr. Walsh. "I ain't got much time."
He scratched his back impatiently through the rips in an amazingly clean blue shirt and squinted at us speculatively under the stiff brim of a tattered helmet. I think he had the narrowest, sharpest pair of eyes I'd ever looked into.
The upshot of this talk was that John Walsh put himself and his old Ford at our disposal, together with his place on a plateau near the edge of the Athi Plains some forty miles from town. His price was five dollars a day, we had to supply our own groceries and kill our own meat. He sketched a rough map which he shoved into Martin's hand, then put his Ford into a sort of standing jump and was off down the street in a cloud of blue stench that hung on the air long after he had gone from sight.
