DSO - Entered the Manchester Regiment as a 2nd Lieut 5 Feb 1887; was promoted Lieutenant 10 April 1899; Captain 13 July 1896. He was employed in the Uganda Protectorate; was promoted Major 21 Dec 1901; served with the Uganda Rifles 1901, and was mentioned in Despatches, received the Medal and clasp, and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order ….. expedition into the Lango country ……… He was wounded in this campaign. He also served in operations in Somaliland, 1902-3 on the Staff, and as Staff Officer to the Inspector-General 16 July to 17 Aug 1903. He was mentioned in Despatches … and received the Medal and clasp. He retired 6 March 1907. He served in the European War as Temporary Lieut.-Colonel, commanding the 16th (Service) Battn. Manchester Regt.; was given the rank of Lieut.-Colonel in the Army 9 Jan 1917.
