General Information:

Colin Garvie - An entry in the East African Red Book 1930/1931 lists D.S.Garvie as a resident of Kakamega. Donald Garvie jnr apparently joined the gold rush to Kakamega that started during the latter part of the 1920s. A great many of the prospectors left their town jobs at the time to take a chance on the gold fields. Unlike most of the prospectors who used poste restante for their mail Donald had taken out a post box number. It would seem from this that he was fairly well established in the district. The mines petered out by the end of the 1930s.
Donald jnr returned to Kenya after prospecting for gold with Stephen Steyn in Tanganyika and subsequently joined the E.A. Engineers when the Second World War broke out. He served and rose to the rank of Captain in the East African and Madagascar Campaigns. He was also mentioned in military despatches.
After the war he left the PWD and farmed in Tanganyika. After independence they went to live in Scotland, then to Australia.
