East Africa - 30 June 1927 - Dr. J. Hope Reford, Uganda's Director of Medical and Sanitary Services, who has left the protectorate on leave prior to retirement, was one of the most popular of officials and one of the best known all-round sportsmen in the country, to which he was first appointed 20 years ago. He served throughout the East African Campaign, accompanying General Crewe's column on its march southwards from Mwanza.
Beck - Plague - What Dr Hope Reford did in Mombasa in 1913 during the outbreak of plague there, could not have been done in Nairobi in 1902. In 1913 Reford and Simpson organized medical and sanitary services in Mombasa, cleansed the town, destroyed the rats and their hiding places, made house inspections, instructed the people on plague, secured hospital accommodations, and prevented the spread of the disease.
