Gazette - 15-12-1900 - It is with much regret that the death is recorded of Mr Francis W. Campin who was drowned on the voyage home in the last English Mail. Mr Campin came to Zanzibar first in 1890 when in conjunction with Mr Hugh C. Robertson he started a branch of the firm of Messrs Forwood Bros & Co. It was chiefly due to his exertions and journalistic abilities that the Zanzibar Gazette so successfully established itself as the first newspaper on the East Coast of Africa. On the retirement of Messrs Forwood Bros & Co from Zanzibar Mr Campin joined the firm of Messrs Boustead Ridley & Co. Of whose Mombasa business he has been the manager during the past 16 months. A popular member of society he will be much missed by his numerous friends in Mombasa and Zanzibar.
