General Information:

Letter dated 22/6/94 - ' ..... In one word, I suppose I have been a 'entrepreneur' probably as a result of my disappointment in being militarily shut off from the War as I was classed a 'key man'! In defence of the civilians (white) who found themselves ignored in many ways, I formed the Mombasa Civilian Residents' Association, and subsequently the EA Cooperative Trading Society Ltd. initially in Mombasa, later followed by branches in Arusha, Moshi and Nairobi. In 1946 my brother, myself and a friend commenced business in Westville, Nbi. on a small capital of £1000, which Company rapidly grew to an organisation with branches in Mombasa, Dar es Salaam, Entebbe, mainly in aviation services; air charter, schedule, flying training, sales, engineering, named Campling Bros. & Vanderwal Ltd. 'CBV Ltd' for short, which you know about in all probability. My brother Laurence, known to all as 'Keith' was a highly qualified aircraft engineer and commercial pilot, and he was responsible for the aviation side; Vanderwal was a very experienced and qualified radio man, also refrigeration, and had the commercial activities under his care. At the time of independence, with four small children, I emigrated to UK ........ later went to S. Africa in 1968, back to the sunshine.

Aero - The Oldest Flying Aircraft in the Country - 5Y-KDD, a Luscombe Silvaire, originally imported by John Carberry - …… Somewhere around 1944 the craft was taken to Jeanes School at Kabete for ground instructional purposes and subsequently discovered by Keith Campling at the Military Disposals Scrap Depot  where the airframe was purchased for £75 and the tail-unit controls etc. at 50 cents per lb. After being rebuilt by him and a new Cub engine imported from South Africa, it then became the first post-war aircraft of the Kenya Register as VP-KDD and Campling Bros was started with it as their first aircraft. Keith Campling sold it to Alan Jennings of Rumuruti …….
