Ujiji - William S. Penrose (c. 1854-1878), an "engine-fitter" and a lay member of the CMS, had been en route to Lake Victoria. Many previous writers have attributed the attack on Penrose as revenge for Debaize's earlier harsh treatment of some of Nyunga's men. They say he left the Arabs' camp and was almost immediately attacked. His men fled, some of his personal servants and others were killed.
