Ujiji - William S. Penrose (c. 1854-1878), an "engine-fitter" and a lay member of the CMS, had been en route to Lake Victoria. Many previous writers have attributed the attack on Penrose as revenge for Debaize's earlier harsh treatment of some of Nyunga's men. Shorter concludes that the encounter resulting in Penrose's death was accidental. …………. Dec 13 1878 - Some of Mr Penrose's men came here. They say he left the Arabs' camp and was almost immediately attacked. His men fled, some of his personal servants and others were killed. He, himself, sat trembling on one of the loads and was shot or speared without attempting to defend himself. ….
