Web - Medals - Captain Basil Culverhouse De Gex - De Gex was born in 1874 and was commissioned as 2nd Lieut. In the East Lancs Regiment, seeing active service through the Malakand Pass with the relief column for Chitral earning the India General Service Medal. He then transferred to the Lancs Fusiliers and was selected for special service within the Colonial Military Employ in East Africa. He took part in the operation against the Ogaden Somalis after the murder of Commissioner Jenner earning this medal the Africa General Service medal clasp Jubaland. Unfortunately for him it was posthumous for whilst out big game hunting with two African porters he stumbled across a lion. He took a snap shot at it wounding it in the foot. It then took cover in the grass which he fired standing on the lee side of it when the lion came for him. His porters ran off! And he took his 2nd shot hitting it in the chest but it still came on. He used the butt of his shotgun as a club and hit the lion over the head. It got him down and worried him. Breaking his leg and arm. He was badly mauled but managed to stick his fingers into the lion's eyes causing it to back off. Seeing this the Somali porter came back and emptied the gun into the lion killing it. De Gex was carried in and had to have his right arm amputated, but died of the effects of the encounter.
Gazette - 1-11-1901 - Probate and Administration - late Captain Basil Culverhouse De Gex of Lancashire Fusiliers Regiment deceased who died up-country on the 11th day of October 1901.
Gazette - 15/10/1901 - The death of Captain de Gex, Lancashire Fusiliers on the 11th instant is announced with much regret.
Captain Basil, Culverhouse de Gex was appointed a 2nd Lieutenant in the 30th East Lancashire Regiment on 21 January 1893 and was promoted Lieutenant 29 January 1896. Served with the First Battalion E Lancs Regt under Sir Robert Low with Chitral Relief Force in 1895 (Medal with clasp). Was promoted Captain 20 June 1900.
On the 20th April 1901 he was appointed  as one of the Special Service Officers for temporary employment in Jubaland and whilst there did most excellent work with the Camels which remained over after the termination of the late Punitive Expedition; and it is entirely due to his exertions and veterinary knowledge that so many of them have been saved.
Captain de Gex had only quite lately proceeded upcountry on leave of absence pending sanction to proceed to South Africa for duty with the Mounted Infantry.
He was a most capable and promising Officer and his early death must be a distinct loss to the Regiment to which he belonged and to the service in general.
