General Information:

Glimpses - The Jewish congregation in Nakuru raised enough money to construct a purpose-built synagogue in 1955/56. The foundation stone was laid by Gustav Kramer, who had come as a refugee in 1938 and quickly risen to prominence. He was so successful that in 1955 he was elected Nakuru's mayor, and in that capacity laid the foundation stone for the Nakuru synagogue. That a Jew was elected to be the second mayor of Kenya's farming capital shows as clearly as anything the integration of Jews into the general European colonial community.
