General Information:

Howard Clarke - G.E.H. Clarke arrived in Kenya in 1927 with the Crown Agents to serve as a driver and later Locomotive Controller on the KUR (later EAR&H). With wife Lillian they had four boys Harold, Hedley, Hugh, and Howard. All attended local schools (Nairobi Primary/Prince of Wales), all were in the Nairobi Cathedral choir, all were in the forces in one way or another. The big job of laying the track for the railway and developing the infrastructure was of course already done but these early employees and their wives had to cope with some fascinating, often highly charged, situations, but succeeded in setting the standards for a railway service enjoyed by countless people from all works of life and setting decent and honest standards of community behaviour.
