John Rawlins - Thika Rapids Farm - William James Dean and John Rawlins (my father) formed a partnership and bought the farm at Auction in Nairobi for £2000 and were excited at the prospects. This was after the fall of Dunkirk and I find it surprising that they made a bid for the farm. They both worked in the Kenya and Uganda Railway workshops in Nairobi, and I can remember how busy they were once the threat of an Italian invasion from Abyssinia became real, not only with maintaining the Railway's rolling stock but also with the additional work done there to equip the local army units converting commercial vehicles (pick up trucks) for fast bush reconnaissance work with Lewis gun mountings on the cab roof and at the rear tailgate.
