Helen Bradley (relative): Gladys was born at 123 New Road, Chatham. While she was working in Hammersmith she attended Joseph Pitman's College in Chiswick, where she learned shorthand and typing two or three nights a week, which enabled her to get a job in the civil service. Cuthbert sent the fare for her sea passage on the Matiana, and she stayed briefly with him when she first went out to Kenya before moving to the YWCA. Family notes say she was personal secretary to the High Commissioner 'in charge of the travelling courts of justice', but I'm not sure how accurate that is.  Gladys and her husband Gordon later lived in England and used to visit us when I was a child. They didn't have any children, and later in life they looked after her mother Isabella.
