General Information:

"Sickly" as a young child and brought up by his grandparents in Holsworthy, Devon.  Newspaper cutting of 22nd February 1908 - quote - 'Holsworthy Fall - Running along the pavement by Mr Kinver's shop on Friday master Cyril Steer of Fore Street fell through an open trap-door into the cellar below smashing his nose and sustaining other injuries'. Joined Barclays Bank in London when he was 17. Joined Banker's Battalion in 1915 and then the 1st/5th Devonshire Regt. (2nd Lt.). Awarded the MC in 1917 in France near Reims. Twice wounded. Spent 2 years in the Army of Occupation based near Koln at the end of WW1. Moved to Kenya in 1929 firstly in Nairobi. Obviously Military minded as he joined the 1st Battalion, Kenya Defence Force in 1930 as a Captain. Transferred to Eldoret in 1931. Eventually back to Nairobi, then Arusha, Mbeya, Dar es Salaam and finally Kampala.
