Cuckoo - Haran was one of the best doctors who ever served in E.A., and fortunately an acknowledged authority on bubonic plague and other tropical diseases. A bluff Irishman, he was rather a quaint character and regarded by many as an eccentric person; but we were always good friends, and I had a great admiration for his medical skill.

Nicholls - an enthusiastic walker. As he left the windows of his house uncurtained, at night passers-by could see him standing upright in front of a sloping board atop a tall packing case, reading a book intently by the light of two tallow candles. He had absolutely no social life.
