Ainsworth - Mentions a Mr Buchanan of Zanzibar who had a fatal accident while riding in the Commissioner's Cup at the Nairobi Race Meeting on Dec. 24th 1901.

Gazette - Nairobi Races - Xmas Meeting 1901 - '….. A gloom also was cast over the proceedings by the unfortunate accident to Mr W. Buchanan of Zanzibar who was thrown from his horse during the second race. It appears that he fractured the base of the skull and without recovering consciousness died a few hours afterwards. The deceased gentleman was a thorough sportsman and very popular and had brought a horse from Bombay especially for this meeting. It is almost impossible to say exactly how the accident happened but the impression is that the saddle slipped round immediately after the commencement of the race.
