General Information:

Hobley - 1898/9 - Mumias - About this time a gloom was cast over our small staff by the death of my district commissioner, a fine young fellow named Donald Malloch. It was my first experience of that deadly disease, black water fever. Malloch complained of a touch of fever on Monday and went to bed; on Wednesday evening he died from heart failure. I heard afterwards that he had had two previous attacks in Nyasaland, and was invalided. A complacent doctor in Scotland, however, cheerfully certified that he considered that the climate of Uganda would suit him admirably, and thus sent an able young officer to his death.
Bright - 11 Nov 1898 - Very sorry to hear from T. that Malloch (of Mumia's) [Daniel Malloch, District Commissioner] died in one day's illness from Blackwater Fever.
North - formerly in Nyasaland; District Officer Mumia's; d. 7/9/1898 at Mumia's, blackwater fever
