He took up land, started farming and then joined the EAMR at the outbreak of war in August 1914.
CWGC - Nairobi British & Indian Memorial - The Memorial consists of 11 stone panels, carved with the names of the British officers and men and the Indian officers. Tom Lawrence There is another memorial to him at St Mary the Virgin Church, Manor Road, Bexley, London, DA5 3LX. It is a rectangular brass plaque on a wooden base with a double line border and latin cross at the top. Lettering in black with capitals in red. The inscription reads “AUudax pro patria et semper paratus"/ To the glory of God / and in loving remembrance of / Arthur Charles Burridge/ the dearly loved elder son / of Arthur and Emily Burridge of Elmington, Bexley/ Born 7th January 1883/ He was killed in action against the German Forces at Ngito, British east Africa / 25th September 1914 when attached to the East African Mounted Rifles / formerly of the Inns of Court Officers Training Corps / This tablet is given by his friends / Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends (IWM website)
Tom Lawrence In a letter home27 Sep 1914 Guy Graham wrote about the action at Ingito “One poor youngster [assumed to be Sonny Elliot] in my section and mess was shot in through the leg, and a man named Burridge attended him in the firing line; also refusing to retreat when the order was given. That was the last seen of either of them alive, for when we returned later the poor boy was found bayoneted through the neck, and his companion shot through the head.”
