East African Standard 23 June 1930 Trent joined the first battalion Northamptonshire Regiment in 1891 and devoted nearly the whole of his life to the regiment. He had his first active service was in the Tirah campaign of 1898, was severely wounded and received the India Frontier Medal and two clasps. In 1906 he became adjutant to his regiment and was later appointed Inspector of Physical Training in India. He was a keen sportsman, always physically fit, and represented his regiment at polo for many years.He served with distinction in France during the Great War, raised and commanded the 5th battalion Northamptonshire Regiment, and temporarily commanded a brigade during 1918, was mentioned four times in despatches and awarded the CMG, DSO and Legion D'Honeur. After the war he was promoted full Colonel. In 1925 he went to Kenya and established his family on a beautiful farm from Beacon Hill, on the northern Aberdares. In 1906 he married the daughter of Major Mackenzie Kennedy.
