General Information:

Genesis - Final incline on the first railway line down the escarpment - a special bungalow was built for the European engine drivers on the side of the heavy inclines. 'One of these drivers, Mr Shutt, had a startling adventure with a leopard that paid him an uninvited visit. ....... Driver Shutt had been out for game during the day and having bagged a bush buck hung the animal up in a back room. Shortly after darkness fell the bungalow inmates were disturbed by a persistent scratching at the back door. One of the dogs, thought Mr Shutt, and opening the door to let the supposed wanderer in he was confronted by a huge leopard. Grabbing his gun, this sportsman pluckily gave chase, but there was little clearing round the bungalow and the forest so dense that he failed to get another glimpse of his quarry. Retracing his steps, a gleam of moonlight showed him the leopard crouching on the roof of the bungalow. Evidently the animal had preferred to scramble up on to the roof out of harms way to making tracks for the forest. Shutt was taking careful aim when an unfriendly cloud obscured the moon and the leopard got away. The venison was left hanging in the same spot a sure lure to entice the leopard back on the following evening. As darkness set in Mr Shutt sat by with his gun eager to secure this fine specimen. He had not long to wait when there came the same scratching on the door. Rather a tight corner to be in, Shutt with his gun on one side and a hungry leopard on the other side of a half inch deal door, with only a few inches between them. Shutt had a brain-wave, carefully covering that part of the door that the beast was scratching, he fired, and a snarl indicated that he had scored a hit. A wounded leopard is a most dangerous animal to come up against, so cautiously opening the door about an inch, Shutt peeped out and was thrilled by the sight of the magnificent beast lying dead, not far from the door.
