Nellie - 1940 - in hospital after his arm was shattered by an anti-tank bullet. 'They put the arm in plaster of paris up at the front and it was left for a month. It went terribly septic, he was dreadfully ill and lived on 693.  They opened it up without an anaesthetic, and the dressing had grown into the wound. They now repeat this every fortnight and say that in 4 months it will have cleared itself. Meanwhile the dressings are agony and the arm stinks to heaven.
