General Information:

East Africa & Rhodesia - 17/5/56 - Mr John Eric Alexander Wolryche-Whitmore, OBE, who has died suddenly at his home in Rongai, Kenya at the age of 74, was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge. He served through the 1914-19 war with the King's Shropshire Light Infantry and the Royal Engineers and then went to Kenya to farm. He was a director of the KFA (Co-operative) Ltd., from 1924 to 1943, and chairman for several years, a member of the board of the Land Bank of Kenya for 25 years, a patron and former president of the Royal Agricultural Society of Kenya and a director of Wolstaston [sic] Estate Co. Ltd., East African Diatomite Syndicate Ltd., and Kapkinolwa Tea Estates Ltd. It was largely his enthusiasm which led to the creation of the Soil Conservation Service, and, himself a most progressive farmer, he was always ready to help others. He had been a keen polo player, angler, and shot, and he was widely respected. He is survived by Mrs Wolryche-Whitmore, née Mary Parry, whom he married in 1914, and one daughter.
