General Information:

Eldoret - Then he waited for the visiting threshing machine and his money; the threshing machine would thresh 50 to 100 bags on a farm at a time and buy this from the farmer there and then - no middleman, forms, restrictions, regulations or red tape to reduce profits. Elbert Steyn Jnr. and Elgonia Kruger were the first European children to be born on the Plateau.

Information from Clare Steyn:
ELBERT LUKAS STEYN (19/02/1877 – 07/11/1957), known as Elbert Lukas Steyn sr., m. Elizabeth Johanna Antoinetta Smit (1889 – 19/06/1916). They got married in February 1908 in Ermelo, Transvaal, South Africa and were members of the 1908 van Rensburg trek from South Africa to Kenya. Elbert was born in the Transvaal, South Africa and died in Eldoret, Kenya. He and Elizabeth Smit had 3 children, all born in Eldoret:
(1) ELBERT LUKAS (23/10/1909 – 22/11/1967), known as Elbert Lukas Steyn jr., m. Leonida ‘Pixie’ Robinson (see Cloete family tree). They were married in Eldoret. Elbert died in Eldoret. Elbert and Leonida had 3 children, all born in Eldoret:
i ELBERT LUKAS STEYN (30/08/1940 - 16/09/1952). Elbert died when he was just 12 years old. He was bitten by a rabid dog and died from rabies. He died in Eldoret.
ii JAMES MADDEN (1/05/1943 – 07/07/1993). Went to school at Saint Mary’s, Nairobi. James married Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Mary Wenham on the 7th. July 1967 in England. James and Betty Steyn sold the farm in Kenya in 1986. They then bought a farm in the Mayenne region of France, which their son Elbert Lukas Steyn (see below) continues to farm today. James died in Rennes, France.
They had three children all born in Eldoret:
a) CLARE ELIZABETH (04/04/1968)
b) SOPHIE MARIA (19/09/1969)
c) ELBERT LUKAS (13/11/1972).
iii JOHANNES BRUWER (08/01/1948), known as ‘Jan’. He went to school at Saint Mary’s, Nairobi. Jan left Kenya to go to university (Imperial College, London) and now (2020) lives with his wife in the USA.
(2) ISAAK PETRUS ALBERTUS (01/06/1913-22/06/1962) m. Maria Magdalena van der Merwe. Isaak died in Eldoret. He and Maria had four children, all born in Eldoret:
i. ELBERT LUKAS STEYN (XXXX), known as ‘Steyntje’. Went to school at Saint Mary’s, Nairobi. Now lives in South Africa with his wife. Has two daughters.
ii. HESTER SOPHIA (10/05/1950 – 2011). I don’t know information of husband and children. She died in South Africa.
iii. ELIZABETH JOHANNA ANTOINETE (13/02/1952). I don’t know information of husband and children.
ii. ISAK PETRUS ALBERTUS (27/09/1957). Known as ‘Sakkie’. I don’t know information of wife and children.
(3) GABRIEL PIETER STEYN (02/10/2015 – 02/01/1920). Died in Eldoret. Elizabeth Johanna Antoinetta Steyn (née Smit) died in Eldoret on the 19th June 1916. Elbert Lukas Steyn sr. remarried in 1918 to Aletha Susanna Catherina Sophia Steenkamp. They had
4 children all born in Eldoret:
(4) SUSANNA CATHERINA SOPHIA (30/12/1918 – 10/04/1994). She was known as ‘Sannie’. m. Jacob Karel Kruger. They went to South Africa sometime around 1970. I don’t know how many children they had.
(5) MARTHA HELENA JOHANNA (31/07/1921 - 1955). She died in Eldoret of leukaemia. Unmarried.
(6) ALETHA SUSANNA CATHERINA SOPHIA (06/09/1923 - 2009) m. Jacob Carel ‘Koppie’ Eksteen. They had 4 children.
(7) JAKOBA ELIZABETH (1930) m. James John Jordaan Snijman. I don’t know how many children they had. She is still alive today (2020) and lives in Pretoria, SA
