General Information:

Nicholson Memoirs - Winter hunting lodges had been built in 1906 north of the Uasin Gishu Plateau at Natwana by Claude Wright's father, at Maji Mzuri by Will and Cecil Hoey, white hunters, and at Cobus Glen for Lord Cork. ....... The Wright family were wealthy - they owned iron foundries in England. At 'Natwana', 3000 acres they had a double tennis court, croquet lawn and a nine hole golf course which had laid on water for the dry weather. Their son Claude was an expert golfer and played for Cambridge. He installed an electric light plant and employed an English nanny to look after the children. Claude Wright decided to live in Kenya and visited England every summer. He bought land before 1910 for 50 cents an acre and developed the land round 'Natwana', the family hunting lodge. 'Karara', 4000 acres, and 'Ziwa', 20,000 acres, were subsequently sold to Mr Bibby of the Bibby shipping lines. Claude Wright's sisters, Gladys and Gwen, married Cecil and Will Hoey, the White Hunters who arranged their winter holidays in Kenya. ....... Claude Wright was very bad tempered before breakfast - he had a new manager every year - Ralph Bancroft, Geoffrey Moore, Hubert Nicholson and George Nicholson. He eventually ended up letting two farms to George and Jack Evans and selling one farm, 'Kilima', to Hubert reserving the golf course and some of the land surrounding 'Natwana'.
