Permanent Way - 'Mwanga was completely under the influence of Pere Lourdel who ....... was exercising all his influence to dissuade the king from placing his country under the Company's protection, because he feared that the political activities of the French missionaries would then be restricted. Pere Lourdel  had advised Mwanga to invite traders of all races to his country, to confine his relations with them to commercial agreements, and to avoid the cession of political influence to any European Power. The policy of the French missionaries was to secure the exclusion of Uganda from any European 'sphere of influence''.
