KFR - Max Ullmann father of Mrs Dorothy Hughes MLC has died at Worthing, England.
Max Ullmann came to British East Africa in 1912 with his young wife Ethel and infant daughter Dorothy where he worked as an Accountant for Messrs Childs, Parr & Joseph in a corrugated iron building in Nairobi's tin town. Later he travelled by ox wagon from Londiani to Eldoret to open a branch for J.H.S. Todd to supply the farmers in the far off Uasin Gishu with their needs during the 1914-18 War.
He returned to Nairobi in 1919 to start the firm of Whitelock & Ullmann as Motor Car Importers, but Max'x heart was in the far away open spaces and he returned to Eldoret where he spent the best years of his life as Founder and Managing Director of the Blue Reefs Gold Mining Company and later as Managing Director of Hughes (Eldoret) Ltd.
He wore his 75 years lightly, driving his car to the last. Less than a year ago, he on Medical advice left Nairobi by air for the south coast of England to recuperate and return to his beloved Kenya, but alas it was not to be. He died as he had lived - in peace, joining that immortal Company of Pioneer Architects who made Kenya what it is, and never counted the cost to themselves.
