Eldoret - In a broadcast he spoke of smelling the mimosa and gums on arrival here [Eldoret]. He preferred the name "64" to Eldoret. He spoke of travel stained people rolling in on ox wagons and of the adventurous men who took land; there was an air of expectancy and hope. £500 in cash or kind was required to develop holdings but most people had not five pence. He spoke of Joubert on his farm at nearly 9,000 feet, who celebrated his 95th birthday there. Mr Stapleton spoke of farmers coming to town at infrequent intervals, bartering, going to Church - a day full of interest. The hardware store sold anything from a bolt to a binder.
