Gethin - 1911 - 'We used to sail over to Naivasha and stay the night at the hotel, which was owned and run by Charles Cotter, an Irishman who had held a commission in the Royal Irish Rifles. He was stationed with his battalion in India, but finding the women too fast and the horses too slow, had to resign owing to debt. There were many rough nights in this Hotel. Lord Delamere was fond of producing boxing gloves at about 11 p.m. when everyone was well lit up, and offering 20 rupees to anyone who would take on the bar and end up on his feet. ........ The hotel caught fire some years later and was completely destroyed. .......... He arrived in Kilindini broke, and when asked to produce £36 as security before being allowed to land, he acted so well, stating he was an officer in the British Army and he considered it an insult to be asked to deposit one cent after all he had done for the British Empire, they let him in when he signed a note stating he had the money in his possession. .... In Sept. 1914 he was helping to patrol the Border near Kisii.'
Nicholls - Naivasha soon boasted a hotel, owned and run by Charles Cottar, an Irishman. …… A few years later the hotel was destroyed by fire and the Bell Hotel took its place.
