East Africa & Rhodesia - 4/3/54 - Mr John Hammond Etheridge, who has died in Kenya at the age of 85, spent some years in Nyasaland before going to East Africa, where he established in Eldoret the company bearing his name and the local weekly paper which began as the Plateau Explosion and later became the Uasin Gishu Advertiser.

Etheridge was formerly proprietor of 'The Nyasaland Times' which after 5 years successful operation and development he resold to its original founder from whom he had purchased it and in 1916 he arrived at Eldoret when there were scarcely any buildings there. ………… Soon after he became established at Eldoret Mr Etheridge started a small newspaper entitled 'The Uasin Gishu Herald' which he ran for 2 years. As the district however was not sufficiently developed for its financial success he relinquished that journal and replaced it with 'The Uasin Gishu Advertiser' which has proved and is proving very successful. It is devoted entirely to advertising. ………… Mr Etheridge is ably assisted in the business by his 2 sons and 2 daughters.
