East Africa & Rhodesia - 7/1/54 - Mr Geoffrey Ewart Lester, who has died suddenly in Sussex in his 60th year, retired in 1944 from the Staff of the Standard Bank of South Africa, after 33 years' service. Joining the London office in 1911, he served during WW1 in Gallipoli and on the Western Front, and went to East Africa in 1922.
In 1926 he became manager in Lindi, was later moved to Nakuru, and then to Kisumu in 1929. Eight years later Mr Lester was appointed manager of the Dar es Salaam branch, which position he held until his retirement. His genial personality and sporting prowess, particularly at golf and tennis, won him a wide circle of friends. He is survived by a widow and a married daughter now living in Canada.

A well known all-round sportsman who did a great deal for Kisumu golf. Winner of the Nyanza Open Golf Championship in 1931, 1933. Men's Champion, Muthaiga GC 1923.
