General Information:

Gethin - DC at Kisii in 1927 - 'a very efficient DC he was, hard working and most helpful. He was out to develop his district and would frequently put suggestions to me about taking up plots in Trading Centres of building houses for the Africans who were employed by the Govt. Stephen Hodge was here for two tours, and during this time many tree plantations were started and considerable road development took place. '
Rayne - 1917 - Turkana - ..... one very large raiding party, in particular, being severely handled in Suk country by a party of police under Mr Hodge, a young Asst. DC. Hodge had previously written to say that as he was no soldier and inexperienced in bush fighting he would appreciate any advice on the latter subject I could find time to send him. Long before my answer arrived he met and unhesitatingly attacked with 40 police nearly 2000 native raiders, amongst whom were a fair sprinkling of riflemen. His action was a complete success, for not only did he inflict a crushing defeat on the raiders, but he also pursued them for miles. I take my hat off to Hodge. ..…..
President of Nakuru Golf Club in 1937.
Debrett - was a MLC 1937-45; appointed Assist. Dist. Commr., Kenya 1913, Senior Dist. Commr. 1935, and Provincial Commr. 1939; retired 1946; has been Provincial Commdt. Kenya Police Reserve since 1952; European War 1915-18 as Lieut. (despatches)
Women 2/95 - In Memoriam - Margaret Mary Vere Hodge - 'Molly' as she was known, was born in Kettering, England on 30.7.1896, and died at Harrison House, Nairobi, on 23.4.1995. She was the daughter of a Bank Manager. During WW1 she started training as a nurse but then transferred to become an ambulance driver and finally an instructor of ambulance drivers.
In 1919 S.O.V. Hodge ('Hoaj'), District Officer in Kenya (he had been seconded to the Army in EA as an Intelligence Officer during the War), returned to England on leave and, whilst staying with his aunt, met and married her daughter Molly. The same year they returned to Kenya when he was posted to Rumuruti as DC. Subsequently they served in Kericho, Kakamega, Kisii and Nakuru. They had 3 sons. Whilst at Kisii they bought a 30-acre plot of land at Subukia and Molly made frequent visits from Kisii in order to supervise the building of a house.
When Hoaj was posted to Nakuru Molly started growing coffee seedlings for sale to neighbouring farmers and when the next door farm came up for sale they managed to get a bank loan and bought it. Molly was then able to start dairy farming and growing pyrethrum. Hoaj was duly promoted to PC at Nakuru but during WW2 he was posted to Mombasa and Molly had to spend most of their time there helping to provide entertainment for the Officers of the Royal Navy. Molly was able to return to full time farming when Hoaj returned to the farm in 1946, and it was about this time that she began to take a serious interest in horse racing. In due course she became a well known race horse breeder and trainer, as well as owner, and had considerable success on the track. Finally, shortly before Hoaj's death in 1979, they were advised to sell the farm and did so on condition that they should be allowed to live in the house for the rest of their lives. Molly had a very liberal attitude to other races and, like many other farmers, tended to the sick amongst the farm labour and their families, and built them and helped them run a cooperative shop. She was a keen supporter of the EAWL and at one time was a Vice President. Molly and Hoaj were keen supporters of the Church and gave the land for and contributed to the building of Subukia Church. After twice being attacked and robbed in her house, Molly moved to Harrison House in 1984.
