Askwith 1 - Humphrey Carver who rowed for Cambridge in 1925 was posted there [Malindi] as district commissioner. He, his 3 sons and I used to bathe regularly together in the evenings. One of these was Russell who in due course married our daughter Jocelyn. Their son John distinguished himself by stroking the Eton crew to victory in the Ladies Plate, representing Cambridge in the Goldie crew of 1995, and competing in a number of international regattas, finally being elected President of the CUBC in 1995. All this in spite of contracting diabetes at an early age. Russell apart from rowing for Cambridge in 1958 sculled for England in the Commonwealth Games that year.
