General Information:

EA & Rhodesia - 9/1/58 - MBE - Senior Supt., Kenya Police Reserve
Habari - It is with regret that we report the passing of John (Jack) Randolph Ward, a former Kenya Police officer, whose death occurred at the Aga Khan Hospital, Nairobi, on 7th February 1963, following a serious illness. He was buried at Langata Cemetery, Nairobi. He enlisted in the Force as a Constable in December 1921, and was appointed an Assistant Inspector in April 1927. Promotions followed to Inspector in 1938, Chief Inspector in 1942 and to gazetted rank as an Assistant Superintendent on the 1st March, 1946. Mr Ward served in many places in the Colony - Nairobi, Nakuru, Thika and Kiambu, including a spell with the Immigration Department at Mombasa. He retired from the Force in May, 1949. Jack's keen interest in the Force brought him out of retirement in July, 1954, and in a K.P.R. capacity as Senior Superintendent of Police, he took over the duties of Personnel and Welfare Officer at Colony Police Headquarters. His kindly and fatherly nature endeared him to all ranks in the Force and his advice and sympathy were always reassuring to those who took their problems to him. He finally left the Police on the 3oth June, 1957, and lived at Thika until his death.
During his service he was on 15 occasions commended for good police work and in 1948 was awarded the Colonial Police Medal for Meritorious Service. He was appointed a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in the New Year Honours 1958. The Kenya Police, in the death of this popular officer and friend, conveys its sincere sympathy to his widow, their two daughters and also to their two sons who are serving members of the Force.
