Campling - Money was short and when Alec turned 14 he was taken out of school and, with Nana's help, obtained a job as an apprentice with the Post Office. It was not a particularly highly-paid job but in those days it was not easy to come by employment in Nairobi and he was lucky to have it, as it offered security and a lifetime career. He handed his small weekly wage packet over to Nana who, while glad of the money, was always generous in allowing Alec spending money, and he was soon able to realise his ambition of becoming the proud owner of an E.W. Douglas motorbike. Alec stayed with the Post Office, working with it in offices all over East Africa, until he retired in 1962 when, together with his wife Edna, he went to live on Spain's Costa del Sol.
