Gazette 6 Dec 1938 Aberdare Voters List
Rundgren - 'I had a lot of time for Douglas Hinde, he had been farming in the Loldaikas for 30 years - heart breaking country when he started. He had started with practically nothing but by ploughing back his profits, and working from dawn until midnight he had become what he was now, one of the most prosperous farmers in Kenya.'
Curtis - p. 69 - 'Some Timau Farmers' - In 1929 Hinde, a New Zealander [wrong], started the farming operations of Loldaiga Hills Ltd. on a 5000 acre stretch of rough waterless country on top of the hills. After 9 years of experiment he found a formula (intensive up-and-down-grading of Red Poll and Boran) which produced good beef cattle. This made excellent profits, most of which he ploughed back into water development. Visitors to a field day on Hinde's 40000 acres in 1966 could view - 10 diesel engined pumping units, 1 windmill, 38 earth dams, 16 concrete rock catchment dams, 45 miles of water piping, 2 overhead irrigation plants (for lucerne), 27 stone reservoirs and troughs fed by pipeline.
Sunday Mirror - 3/11/63 - Kenya waits for Freedom Day - Off the silver sands and sighing casuarina trees of Diani Beach near Mombasa rides the boat of settler Douglas Hinde who is over seventy. The old man and the sea have been friends for many years now. Most days he picks up his turtleshell ear trumpet and his special tackle and boats out into the inky blue Indian Ocean after marlin. Blue marlin, Big blue marlin - they never come big enough for this sun-blackened man.
