General Information:
Foster - as neither he nor his neighbours knew, at that stage, how to put up a roof, he followed the 80lb tent design with a centre ridge pole and two uprights. There was no glass for windows and no wood for - or carpenters to make - shutters; so medieval "arrow" slits let in the light and air, when the door - the top of a packing case - was shut. An alternative was to put wire netting over a larger opening. This let in more light and air and the wire netting was intended to keep out the lions and leopards.

Curtis - p. 69 - 'Some Timau Farmers' - 'Another Soldier Settler, Major General Sir R.H. Ewart, started life on his farm in a tent. Later he built himself a one-room mud and wattle house. Since neither he nor the neighbours knew how to put on a roof, the house was built to the same design as the tent with a ridge pole and two uprights. It was still being used as a guest house in 1979.
