He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, and shortly after qualifying he joined the medical service of the East India Railways. He was principal medical officer for some years before he retired in 1916. He served with the South Africa Forces in Tanganyika with the rank of lieutenant colonel in 1916-19, and was mentioned in dispatches and awarded the O.B.E. After the war he farmed for a time in Kenya before turning his attention to public health. He was later appointed medical officer of health for Nairobi. After his wife's death he went to live at West Clandon, Surrey. In 1940, at the age of 74, he volunteered for service with the British India Steam Navigation Company, and was a ship's medical officer for the next three years.
