Fitzgerald - successfully ascended the Tana and the Juba and navigated the former for 350 and the latter for 400 miles - thus demonstrating not only the practicability of navigating these rivers with a vessel of considerable size, but their great value as future commercial highways.

He was promoted to Midshipman in 1863 and to Acting Sub Lieutenant on 5 July 1865. ………….
